Guardian
Persepolis, Fars, Iran, 2007
A carved lion that once crowned one of the columns of the Apadana, the great audience hall of Darius I at Persepolis, ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire. For centuries these stone guardians held up the roof above the kings of Persia. This one has fallen, but it still faces the last columns standing. The stone was lit by hand at dusk as the sky turned deep blue.
Medium format 6×6 transparency film, 2007.
