The Eternal Struggle
Persepolis, Fars, Iran, 2007
A lion sinks its claws into the haunch of a bull in one of the best-known reliefs at Persepolis, carved some 2,500 years ago on the palace stairways of the Achaemenid kings. The scene appears again and again across the site, and is often read as a symbol of Nowruz, the Persian New Year: the lion as the sun of spring, overpowering the bull of winter at the turning of the season. Late golden light brings out every detail of the carving, from the lion’s mane to the rosettes framing the panel above.
Large format film, 2007. From the Pardis series.
